- City to start loose leaf collection on Nov. 7th
The Reidsville Public Services Department began curbside loose leaf pick-up on November 7th, 2022. Please place loose leaves in your yard, near the curb, or edge of pavement (away from storm drains or parked cars). Do not place leaves in the traveled portion of the roadway. The schedule will vary when volume is extremely heavy and for holidays. Sticks, brush, and any other foreign objects must be removed from your loose leaves as this delays the collection process and can severely damage our collection equipment. Piles found to contain these objects will not be collected until cleared of debris. Residents are encouraged to retain leaves on their property and compost when possible. This service will end the week of January 3, 2023. After your collection day that week you must bag your leaves to be collected by the Solid Waste Department. If you have questions about this service, please call 349-1070 from 7:00 – 3:30 Monday through Friday.
- Boil Water Advisory Lifted
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2022 UPDATE: This is a public service alert from the City of Reidsville. The Boil Water Advisory which had been extended until 12 noon today, Friday, October 7, has been lifted. The water samples collected yesterday and incubated for 24 hours show no signs of contamination. We appreciate your patience over the past few days while repairs were made to the City’s 24-inch main water line and the resulting Boil Water Advisory. Again, the Boil Water Advisory for the City of Reidsville has been lifted. Thank you. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2022 UPDATE: This is an updated public service alert from the City of Reidsville. Water service has been restored after a contractor hit the City’s 24-inch main water line Wednesday afternoon. Public Services crews worked through the early morning hours to make the needed repairs. There have been very few reports of brown water; however, the City of Reidsville’s current Boil Water Advisory has been extended until 12 Noon on Friday, October 7. Based on State guidelines, Staff have taken required water samples, which will be incubated for 24 hours and then analyzed. The Boil Water Advisory means consumers should boil all water used for human consumption or use bottled water. This would include drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and in food preparation. Vigorous boiling of water for one minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water. This Boil Water Advisory affects anyone who receives water service from the City of Reidsville. Thank you. UPDATE: Final CodeRED Alert from the City of Reidsville today, October 5th, 2022 regarding the damage done this afternoon to the City’s 24-inch water main, which sends water from the Water Treatment Plant to the City. City crews are in the final stage of repairs on this line and will cautiously be restoring service. The Fire Department and Public Works crews will be flushing lines across the City tonight, but residents will most likely experience brown water. The City of Reidsville will be under a Boil Water Advisory until 12 noon on Thursday, October 6, which includes drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and in food preparation. Vigorous boiling of water for one minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water. Residents may experience periods of low pressure during this time. We continue to urge citizens to conserve water or to use bottled water until these problems are resolved. No further updates will occur until Thursday morning. Thank you. Contractor Strikes Reidsville's Main Water Feed to City OCTOBER 5, 2022: The City of Reidsville has issued a CodeRED announcement to alert residents for the need to restrict water consumption over the next several hours. A contractor unaffiliated with the City has bored into a 24-inch water main on Scales Street. Reidsville Public Works crews were on the scene to make repairs shortly before 5 p.m. However, this is the main water feed from the Water Treatment Plant to the City. Water service will be limited to what is available in the City’s elevated storage tanks. Residents are urged to minimize water consumption until the repairs are made, which could take in excess of four hours. A CodeRED Alert has been issued by the City. Another CodeRED will be issued when repairs are completed.
- Mayor Gorham Declares City State of Emergency
Reidsville Mayor Donald L. Gorham signed a Declaration of a State of Emergency that became effective at 2 p.m. today, September 30, 2022 prior to Hurricane Ian’s impending arrival. Rockingham County and other local municipalities have enacted similar declarations, also effective at 2 p.m. today. Officials are forecasting that after Ian, currently a Category 1 Hurricane, travels through South Carolina, it will diminish to a Tropical Storm. The storm is expected to continue on a north/northwest track through North Carolina, passing very close to Reidsville and Rockingham County. It is possible that there could be widespread power outages and flooding. Ian is predicted to strike Rockingham County very hard around 8 p.m. tonight with the biggest brunt of the storm coming at 2 a.m. Saturday, October 1, according to forecasting models. The City’s emergency services personnel, including fire and police, are urging citizens to stay off the roads, especially by 8 p.m. tonight. The storm could be out of the area by 2 p.m. Saturday. Reidsville Police may block the underpass area (railroad trestle) of Harrison Street, which often floods and creates a hazard for drivers. In preparation of the storm, Reidsville Public Services workers and the Police Department have been checking for any clogged storm drains around the City. Police Chief Ray Gibson and Fire Chief David Bracken report that all generators and emergency lighting have been checked and are ready for use. Reidsville Fire Chief Bracken has stated that, if an emergency situation warrants, citizens can come to the City’s three fire stations, which are open 24/7. The Reidsville Police Department will have additional officers on standby as necessary. Public Works crews will be ready once the storm passes to work on downed trees and other debris. However, felled trees entwined with power lines must be taken care of by Duke Energy crews, who are able to assess the damages and dangers.

- Downtown Streetscape in Reidsville is under way
July 8, 2022: Crews will begin boring under the roadway at the intersection of Scales and Gilmer Streets early next week to lay conduit for electrical and fiber, but officials indicate the work should not require street closure. However, vehicular traffic may experience some temporary delays at times. Crews will then move to Morehead Street between Main and Scales Streets to do similar work. Again, there are no plans currently to close Morehead Street, but sidewalks may be closed temporarily to pedestrian traffic to ensure safety. This work is part of the City’s planned downtown Streetscape project. Recently approved by Reidsville City Council, the Streetscape plan has been created by staff over the course of several months, and the end result should be an even more beautiful downtown area. Based on a plan developed by Insight Architects back in 2005, the project has been designed not only to improve the downtown’s aesthetics but also to help eliminate some existing problems that have occurred along Scales Street over recent years. The City’s Public Works Department has already begun phase one of the plan, which addresses a sinking issue that has occurred at Mural Park located at the corner of Scales and Gilmer Streets. Fencing has barricaded part of the park area for several months, and this project will not only fix this problem but also replace the beautiful brick pavers there. The retaining wall will be rebuilt and shrubbery removed, but Mural Park will still remain a gathering place for the downtown area. The project also will upgrade and replace asphalt and decorative stampings found in the 100 and 200 blocks of South Scales Street and remove and replace existing sidewalks along the street. The City had to take down existing trees along Scales Street because their roots had grown so large underground that they had made the pavement uneven and a tripping hazard. Some of the tree roots were making their way into existing storefronts so a solution needed to be found. This project will make those much needed repairs while also repaving South Scales and Gilmer Streets as part of the process. Existing light poles will be replaced with decorative light poles with banner arms and electrical boxes. The City will be able to use these poles for appropriate signage and to help provide electricity during street festivals. Looking toward the future, the City also decided to upgrade the electrical and fiber options on both sides of the street while the Streetscape was being done. That is the work being done the week beginning July 11th. Downtown cameras and the current free downtown Wi-Fi access points will also be replaced and upgraded. Twenty-eight Crepe Myrtles were selected to replace the other trees because their root systems are not as aggressive. Well lights around the bottom of each tree will provide up-lighting. The decorative planter boxes will have to be removed, but the City plans to reuse them at local parks, Lake Reidsville and in the City’s proposed Depot District. City officials met in recent weeks with downtown merchants to explain the changes and assure them that any inconveniences from the project will be kept at a minimum. Having already started, the project is estimated to take between 8-18 months to complete. City staff will be able to do some of the work, but current staffing and material availability may impact the project. But the end result should ensure that downtown Reidsville will be even more of a lovely destination spot for visitors and a source of pride for our residents. - 30 -
