  • RDC Honoring Lives Lost to Covid March of 2020

Jill Weston Main Street Manager, City of Reidsville (336) 349-1111 230 W. Morehead St. Reidsville, NC 27320 www.rockitinreidsville.com RDC Honoring Lives Lost to Covid March of 2020 began a year most would like to forget. As a community we have come through this storm together and can finally see what we think is the light at the end of the tunnel. But for many families a light was taken. In honor of the residents of Rockingham County that have died to date of Covid-19, a memorial has been erected by the Reidsville Downtown Corporation at the corner of Scales and Williams Street across from the Reidsville Fire Department. 83 white flags have been placed on the site in honor of each Covid death in Rockingham County. To honor your family member, please visit the site and write their name or any memorial on a flag. According to Melanie Morrison, Reidsville Downtown Corporation President,” The RDC felt this memorial would give the community an opportunity to share in the grief of so many families losses. This has been a very hard time for the entire community and losses have been felt in many ways. We have worked hard to keep our businesses downtown and our community as a whole intact. But some holes can’t be filled and we recognize that and want to honor those lives lost. We will get through this together because we are Team Reidsville.” For more information please call 336-349-1111.

  • Reidsville Showcase At Rockingham Theatre

Judy Yarbrough City of Reidsville (336) 349-1099 230 W. Morehead St. Reidsville, NC 27320 www.rockitinreidsville.com The City of Reidsville is thrilled to announce that Brown Entertainment, LLC is purchasing the Rockingham Theatre in Downtown Reidsville. This project has been in the works for almost a year and, once completed, will be one of the biggest tourism attractions in Reidsville as well as Rockingham County. Reidsville Showcase will be offering national recording artists live in concert. The Browns currently own and operate Liberty Showcase in Liberty, NC, and Reidsville Showcase will serve as a second location. According to owners Dewey and Leslie Brown, “Concerts held in this type of venue offer a different experience than a larger venue. Fans can enjoy their favorite recording artists in an intimate and personal performance space. Audience size is limited and there’s not a bad seat in the house.” The project will not only encompass the Theatre, but the Mural Park Building located adjacent to the property. Plans are to expand the theatre to include a larger ticket area, refreshment area and dressing rooms for the artists. There will be a second floor added on the mural side with space for possible dining and offices, among other things. There is also space for a third floor. Artists that are currently performing in Liberty are of the Country and Bluegrass genre. The Browns will continue that as well as expand to encompass other forms of entertainment. According to Reidsville Mayor, Dr. Jay Donecker, “I am excited the Browns will be rejuvenating one of Reidsville’s crown jewels. This is a dream coming true in which we return to having our Rockingham Theater being the center of our downtown Contact: Judy Yarbrough City of Reidsville Phone: (336) 349-1099 230 W. Morehead St. Reidsville, NC 27320 www.rockitinreidsville.com entertainment district as it was 90 years ago. The City Council has been diligent in ensuring that the Theatre and Mural Building be something that would benefit our downtown and our citizens as well as the entire county, and we think this project will be exactly what we worked hard to make happen.” According to Leslie Brown, “We are beyond blessed to have this opportunity to place a second Showcase in Reidsville, NC. We could not be more encouraged by the city and our patrons. We appreciate that more than words can express. We are looking forward to the grand opening of The Reidsville Showcase Theatre!” Tim Robertson’s family has owned the theatre since 1993 and after his father passed, the family wanted to ensure his legacy would carry on. According to Tim, “Our family also wanted to ensure whoever purchased the Theatre would continue to bring our father’s vison to life and keep his legacy going. We could not be happier.” Robin Yount, Rockingham County Tourism Manager stated, “The announcement of Reidsville Showcase is very exciting not only to Reidsville but also for the entire County. This will be a major contribution to the Tourism industry in Rockingham County, and is important for the benefits it brings to our community. It not only contributes towards more economic activities but also generates more employment, revenues and plays a significant role in development within our County. The Rockingham County Tourism Development Authority is excited to work along with Reidsville to promote this exciting venue.” Judy Yarbrough, Reidsville City Marketer , “This type of project, along with the many other developing projects happening in Reidsville, is more than exciting. It takes time and a lot of planning to make these projects become a reality. Reidsville Showcase is going to put feet on the streets and heads in our beds, which means more revenues for our businesses and our City. It also brings a very unique piece to our quality of life story. It’s a ‘win win’ for everyone and will be one of the biggest indoor tourist attractions in the City and the County”! Reidsville Showcase is scheduled to open in 2021. For more information, please contact City Marketer, Judy Yarbrough, at 336-349-1099, or Brown Entertainment at 336-622-3844.

  • Reidsville Recognized as Budget-Friendly for Renters

The City of Reidsville is a very budget-friendly option for renters. Reidsville was ranked on its rent-to-income ratio by LendEDU, coming in at #25 in the State of North Carolina and #714 in the US. Using real estate data from the US Census Bureau, the company noted that Reidsville has an average annual rent cost of $8,160 and a median household income of $41,771 for a rent-to-income ratio of 19.54%. LendEDU explains that a rent-to-income ratio is the proportion of a city’s median household income that goes to annual rent costs, including utilities. It is recommended that a renter’s rent should cost no more than 30% of their annual income. At 19.54%, these numbers reflect Reidsville’s proximity to high-paying jobs relative to affordable housing in the area, LendEDU reports. It also means young adults especially will have the opportunity to save their money before taking the step to home ownership. “Reidsville has seen tremendous growth in new industry jobs over the past four years, which results in more disposable income for those entering, or advancing within, their careers,” said Jeff Garstka, the City’s Economic Development Director. “A direct result of this success is shown by the absorption of well over 200 new apartments in the City as well as new single-family residential development. Whether people are moving to Reidsville or ‘upgrading’ their living situation we expect these positive trends to continue as we market the community as a viable alternative to larger, neighboring metropolitan areas that have a higher cost of living.” With Reidsville so close to Greensboro, people living here can enjoy the many qualities of a small city and be in a large metro in minutes. “We have so many people relocating to Reidsville from all over the country as well as moving from more large cities,” said the City’s Marketer Judy Yarbrough. “People are looking for a small community to raise a family, get outdoors and get to know their neighbors. The housing market is booming and many people move here and rent while they find a new home or they have decided that owning a home has too many expenses and just want the luxury of renting. Our proximity to Greensboro is also a benefit to young professionals who are just starting out and looking for a lower rent option close enough to the night life. Reidsville provides all those qualities and so many more. We mirror our tagline ‘Live Simply. Think Big!’ ”

  • Project DREAM Brings New Art to Downtown

April 15, 2020 City of Reidsville Press Release Reidsville Contact: Missy Matthews Market Square / Main Street Manager 336.349.1111 mmatthews@reidsvillenc.gov The City of Reidsville and Reidsville Downtown Corporation are celebrating the completion of several new public art projects in downtown Reidsville. These public artworks are part of the Project DREAM (Downtown Reidsville Empowering Art Movement) initiative. An official Ribbon Cutting will be scheduled in the summer. The most recent addition is a colorful mural north of the Reidsville Police Department on a retaining wall at the parking lot near North Scales Street. Gina Franco donated her time and materials to paint the vibrant mural, which features positive phrases such as “Spread Kindness” and “See Good in All Things.” Gina is a North Carolina-based mural artist. Her work has been featured in many locations, including Greensboro’s “Selfie Wall” near Davie Street and Friendly Avenue, Rainbow Alley in downtown Greensboro, Krispy Kreme Corporate office in Charlotte, Durham Food Hall, and others in Miami, Atlanta and Denver. “I’m thrilled with the new mural and the opportunity to play a role in Reidsville’s rapidly growing public art movement. When I first visited about a year ago, I saw the City not only as a blank canvas from an art perspective, but the overall vibe and spirit of the community was so attractive to me and my work. During these difficult times, I wanted to add some positive affirmations and light to challenge all the negative thoughts that have permeated through our entire society. I’m excited to join Team Reidsville and continue my partnership with the City on future projects!” Another project, “Abstract Alley,” located at 114 S. Scales St., and was recently completed by Rafael and Raquel Cruz, juniors at Rockingham County High School and founding members of the Rockingham County Youth Arts Council. Raquel is the current President and Rafael serves as Treasurer. Raquel stated “Rafael and I are really proud to add Abstract Alley to Reidsville’s public art portfolio. We want our downtown to be a place that attracts young people and feels alive, and we hope this new art space contributes some additional positivity to our community.” “Abstract Alley is a fun, colorful addition to downtown,” said Melanie Morrison, vice president of the Reidsville Downtown Corporation and head of Project DREAM. “They have transformed a dark, underutilized space into something bright and magical.” In addition to the Cruz twins’ colorful mural, eco-friendly, solar string lights have been added to the walkway so the mural can be seen day or night, and other enhancements are also planned for the space. In the City-owned public parking lot behind “Abstract Alley,” local artist Ruby Blanco has transformed utility meters with a whimsical turtle named “Esméralda” and colorful mandala designs. Ruby is a local tattoo artist and body painter and has also used her talents to paint several fire hydrants downtown. Reidsville Mayor Jay Donecker said, “Reidsville City Council and staff have put a lot of effort into beautifying our historic downtown. The DREAM project is transforming our downtown into an experience where people of all ages and walks of life can enjoy unique public art in addition to all of the shopping and dining venues already here. For those who enjoy taking ‘selfies,’ our new murals are must-see destinations!”
