  • Clock Tower Dedication Begins 150th Celebration

The City of Reidsville kicks off its year-long Sesquicentennial Celebration with the dedication of the new Clock Tower at the corner of South Scales and Williams Street on Saturday, January 7, 2023. As the City turns 150 years old in 2023, the Sesquicentennial Clock Tower dedication set for 2 p.m. begins a year of events, activities and open houses. Back in 2019, City officials and staff started making plans for “Reidsville150”, including the erection of the Clock Tower at the southern entrance into the downtown area. In June of that year, the City Council agreed to purchase a section of land across from Fire Station No. 1 to accommodate the clock tower. At the time, Commonwealth donated $10,000 towards the project. Combined with the 9/11 Memorial across the street at the fire station, the Sesquicentennial Clock Tower will serve as a defining point or gateway into the downtown. Verdin Clock Company will be on site the first week of January to install the clock. Workers have been pouring the pad for the base of the tower and erecting the half wall, which will include a commemorative plaque. The dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, will be held at the site, weather permitting. Those attending will then be invited to Fire Station No. 1 to view historical displays and enjoy refreshments. A Sesquicentennial Medallion will be hidden on the site, which will entitle the name of the finder to be put in a drawing for a special prize later in the year. In case of rain or inclement weather, the dedication ceremony will be held in Fire Station No. 1. Several Sesquicentennial giveaways will be available to those in attendance, including a Calendar which details upcoming events and provides historical information about the City. Also in January, the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant, 407 Broad Street, will hold an open house from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2023. Citizens will be able to tour the facility and learn how the City processes 2.4 million gallons of raw sewage each day and how their actions can impact not only the plant’s operations but also the environment. Other events planned throughout the year include a Black History Month Program detailing African-American influences on City Government; a Founder’s Day Celebration at the Governor Reid House; a Roaring 20s Lawn Party at the Penn House and more.

  • City to start loose leaf collection on Nov. 7th

The Reidsville Public Services Department began curbside loose leaf pick-up on November 7th, 2022. Please place loose leaves in your yard, near the curb, or edge of pavement (away from storm drains or parked cars). Do not place leaves in the traveled portion of the roadway. The schedule will vary when volume is extremely heavy and for holidays. Sticks, brush, and any other foreign objects must be removed from your loose leaves as this delays the collection process and can severely damage our collection equipment. Piles found to contain these objects will not be collected until cleared of debris. Residents are encouraged to retain leaves on their property and compost when possible. This service will end the week of January 3, 2023. After your collection day that week you must bag your leaves to be collected by the Solid Waste Department. If you have questions about this service, please call 349-1070 from 7:00 – 3:30 Monday through Friday.

There have been very few reports of brown water; however, the City of Reidsville’s current Boil Water Advisory has been extended until 12 Noon on Friday, October 7. Based on State guidelines, Staff have taken required water samples, which will be incubated for 24 hours and then analyzed. The Boil Water Advisory means consumers should boil all water used for human consumption or use bottled water. Water service will be limited to what is available in the City’s elevated storage tanks. Residents are urged to minimize water consumption until the repairs are made, which could take in excess of four hours. A CodeRED Alert has been issued by the City. Another CodeRED will be issued when repairs are completed.

  • Mayor Gorham Declares City State of Emergency

Reidsville Mayor Donald L. Gorham signed a Declaration of a State of Emergency that became effective at 2 p.m. today, September 30, 2022 prior to Hurricane Ian’s impending arrival. Rockingham County and other local municipalities have enacted similar declarations, also effective at 2 p.m. today. Officials are forecasting that after Ian, currently a Category 1 Hurricane, travels through South Carolina, it will diminish to a Tropical Storm. The storm is expected to continue on a north/northwest track through North Carolina, passing very close to Reidsville and Rockingham County. It is possible that there could be widespread power outages and flooding. Ian is predicted to strike Rockingham County very hard around 8 p.m. tonight with the biggest brunt of the storm coming at 2 a.m. Saturday, October 1, according to forecasting models. The City’s emergency services personnel, including fire and police, are urging citizens to stay off the roads, especially by 8 p.m. tonight. The storm could be out of the area by 2 p.m. Saturday. Reidsville Police may block the underpass area (railroad trestle) of Harrison Street, which often floods and creates a hazard for drivers. In preparation of the storm, Reidsville Public Services workers and the Police Department have been checking for any clogged storm drains around the City. Police Chief Ray Gibson and Fire Chief David Bracken report that all generators and emergency lighting have been checked and are ready for use. Reidsville Fire Chief Bracken has stated that, if an emergency situation warrants, citizens can come to the City’s three fire stations, which are open 24/7. The Reidsville Police Department will have additional officers on standby as necessary. Public Works crews will be ready once the storm passes to work on downed trees and other debris. However, felled trees entwined with power lines must be taken care of by Duke Energy crews, who are able to assess the damages and dangers.
